LA aaroe
Los Angeles is living proof that you don’t have to amass centuries of history to be legendary. LA may not have Greek temples or 17th Century palaces, but we’re the center of the movies — along with the unforgettable stars and performances that capture imaginations around the world. In this issue, we look at a neighborhood that one of those history makers called home … and some favorite ways to celebrate our own timeless legends under the stars.

In Place: Little Holmby

It’s easy to see what makes Little Holmby one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in LA. Tucked next to lavish Holmby Hills, the enclave is a mixture of softly rolling knolls; wide, tree-shaded streets; and beautiful architecture, from historic revival homes by Paul Williams to Modernist gems by Richard Neutra.
Among Little Holmby’s famous residents was the glamorous smoky-voiced, tuxedo-rocking film icon Marlene Dietrich, who hosted the most dazzling stars of her era in an elegantly romantic 1932 Spanish Colonial on Birchwood Drive. The L.G. Scherer-designed home overlooking the country club recently made one of its few appearances on the market in 85 years when we listed it for $6,495,000. more »

Here are some LA-based organizations that can help you play a part… all year long. more »
Downtown park opens after years of delays DOWNTOWN PARK OPENS AFTER YEARS OF DELAYS

In 2001, an abandoned 32-acre rail yard locals called the Cornfield was set aside to become a park instead of an industrial center. Sixteen challenging years later, Los Angeles State Historic Park — an expanse of 1,500 trees, grassy hills, picnic areas and wildlife habitat — just had its grand opening. The date, appropriately enough, was Earth Day. more »
