Nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains just twenty minutes from Los Angeles, Topanga is a quieter, more natural world, bounded by State Park or conservancy lands, the Pacific Ocean and Malibu, and Pacific Palisades. 8,000 years ago, the Chumash Indians considered Lower Topanga a sacred meeting place for tribes all along the coast. It later became a Japanese fishing village.

Topanga was first settled by Europeans in 1839. William Randolph Hearst owned the property for a time, and used it as a rustic weekend getaway spot for celebrity guests. It later became a bohemian enclave attracting artists, musicians, filmmakers, and other creatives. During the 1960s, the canyon became a magnet for rock stars like Neil Young, who recorded most of his After the Gold Rush album there. The Topanga Corral featured locals like Canned Heat, Taj Mahal and Emmylou Harris, and later hosted emerging punk bands. Jim Morrison’s "Roadhouse Blues" is said to have been inspired by the drive to The Corral.

In the 1950s blacklisted actor Will Geer moved his family to a plot in the canyon where friend Woody Guthrie had a shack. They gradually attracted an artists' colony. The Geer family has run the outdoor Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum, now an Equity venue, since 1973. The canyon hosts numerous festivals, including Topanga Days and the annual Topanga Film Festival.

Topanga has retained its rustic feel. Two strip malls make up the local center of commerce, and the only lodging is two bed and breakfast inns. The natural surroundings — streams, waterfalls, cliffs of exposed bedrock, landmark rock outcroppings, and overlooks with panoramic views — are a vital part of the culture. There are many trails for walking, hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. Homes range from large equestrian estates, ocean view villas, stunning architecturals and historic hunting lodges to classic ranch homes, beach houses, quaint vintage cottages and rustic cabins.
