WiFi joins Top 10 list for outdoor amenities
For the first time, wireless Internet is among the ten outdoor items homeowners want most, says a survey by the American Society of Landscape Architects. Outdoor WiFi has gone far beyond surround sound, lighting and security to controlling outdoor kitchen appliances, adjustable shading and more — taking indoor Smart Home conveniences outside.
The survey by the American Society of Landscape Architects clearly showed that more Americans want to take their plugged-in lifestyles outside: about 70 percent of landscape architects said they expected clients to request this feature.
Still, the most popular outdoor elements tended to be tried and true and focused on sustainability. Native, drought-tolerant plants both received about 83 percent of the vote, followed by low-maintenance landscapes (79 percent) and vegetable gardens (76.5 percent). The remainder of the list was filled with eco-friendly features, from permeable paving (over 76 percent) and reduced lawn area (nearly 73%) to drip/water-efficient irrigation (71percent) and rainwater/graywater harvesting (over 70 percent). Only fire pits/fireplaces (71.5 percent) were outside the technology and ecology categories. But then, fire has topped man’s most-wanted list since the dawn of time.
