The name Tarzana was given to this rustic oasis as an homage to its founder, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and the Tarzan character he created. In 1915, Burroughs obtained a large parcel of land from Harrison Otis, owner of the LA Times and major developer of the San Fernando Valley, and built a large estate surrounded by a forest. He subdivided the remaining portion, at the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains, to be sold off for lavish, private estates rivaling those of Beverly Hills and Malibu. Since its beginnings, this has been one of the most secluded, wealthy, and unique of all Southern California neighborhoods. These early ranch parcels set the tone for ranch style homes in a wide range of sizes and prices, all on tasteful and well-cared-for grounds. From exclusive communities like Braemar in the lower foothills to luxurious estates in Mulholland Park, Silverhawk Ridge, and Monte Verde Estates, there are many opportunities to invest in Tarzana real estate. Catering to evolving tastes and trends, this community has begun to embrace innovation in architecture as well.
Hollywood stars, entertainment professionals and affluent families seek the luxurious, peaceful, and rustic environment Tarzana offers. Pools, tennis courts, security, event rooms and gyms and are among many amenities for privileged residents in the gated hillside neighborhoods. The Braemar Country Club is home to golf and a community gathering place for activities and events.
While most commute to the studios in the Valley and Hollywood, many in the medical and financial professions work nearby. Public schools are very good thanks to active parent involvement, and there are many private schools nearby. read less «
